World Book Day 2019

Throughout the first week of Term 3 we have spent time exploring books as part of our celebrations for International World Book Day. In 1995 UNESCO decided that the World Book and Copyright Day would be celebrated on 23 April, as the date is also the anniversary of the death of William Shakespeare and Inca Garcilaso de la Vega, as well as that of the birth or death of several other prominent authors.

Our week featured our author’s visit on Wednesday 24th plus work focused on books. Please visit the school office to see some of the work that was completed.

On Friday 26th April, most of the children and some of the adults came to school dressed as their favourite book characters. This was LOADS of fun but also enabled us to be introduced to some books we had not heard of. There were some well-known characters such as Gangsta Granny, Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, Wally (from Where’s Wally), The Cat in the Hat as well as the less well-known like Fancy Nancy, Will from Running Wild and Evelyn the Fairy.

Fancy Nancy entertained us in assembly and some of the work completed during the author’s visit was shared. Each class from Y1-8 chose a ‘best dressed’ character which included – Hiccup from How to Train your Dragon,. Asterix, the witch from Room on the Broom, Wil from Running Wild, Gangsta Granny x 2, Grandpa from Grandpa’s Great Escape, Fantastic Mr Fox and a Warrior boy Warrior.

Open a book

And you will find

People and Places of every kind

Open a book

And you can be

Anything you want to be

Open a book

And you can share

Wonderous worlds you find in there

Open a book

And I will too

You read to me and I’ll read to you
