Year 7 have kick started their journey as Key Stage 3 Scientists with an exciting study into all things living.
“What counts as living”? “What are the different forms of life?” “What are the similarities and differences between organisms?” These are just some of the questions that our young scientists in Year 7 have been answering in their first few Key Stage 3 lessons. Children have had to draw from a wide range of investigative skills in order to begin learning about life of all sizes.
Children began by developing their understanding of what exactly makes something “living”; they have thought about the seven life processes and what they look like in a range of different organisms.
For most of us, when we think about living things, our minds probably go to different animals, maybe even different types of plants, but with the help of some new scientific equipment, Year 7 have been able to think a little deeper…
Armed with microscopes, children have been zooming in and discovering what is invisible to the naked eye. This has allowed them to continue to stretch their scientific understanding of the world, categorising these microorganisms according to their similarities and differences: honing their classification skills yet further.
