Anglo-Saxon Metalwork

The Year 5 children have been the latest Anglo-Saxons in the making. Drawing inspiration from the intricate buckles, jewellery, and purse fittings crafted by the Anglo-Saxons from gold, silver, and bronze, the children set to work.

While the ancient metalsmiths used real metal, we recreated the process with paper and metallic paint. After carefully designing patterns in our books, we embarked on the challenging task of engraving with the ends of matchsticks.

Much like the Anglo-Saxon artisans, our work involved intricate dots and dashes. You may need to get up close to truly appreciate the detail—this was no child’s play!
