Bakers in the Making

18th May 2023

Last week, the FS1 children learned about kindness, sharing and helping one another. They read The Little Red Hen who couldn’t find anybody to help her make bread. I’m sure if she had asked the children in FS1, they would have been more than happy to lend a helping hand.

The children were treated to a real surprise, by having a visit from a real hen in class as part of their learning. They were able to name the different parts of a hen by looking at it and they touched it and fed it for the better part of the morning. They popped on their creativity hats after the experience of seeing a hen and looking after it in order to make their own ‘Little Red Hens’.

To help the children learn new vocabulary and make links to the world, the FS1’s were asked if they would like to make bread and everyone said yes! First, they watched videos of different types of bread and how bread was made.

They got first-hand experience of kneading and rolling dough which was great for their fine motor development, exploring weighing and measuring ingredients that were to be used. They patiently waited and watched as the dough grew in size and off to the oven it went.

Finally…. Everyone happily devoured their slice of bread that was to be taken home.
