BNIS Remembers

12th November 2021

On Monday our whole school Thought of the Week introduced Remembrance Day and in particular focussed on the symbolism of poppies. This led into a whole school Art project, in which every child made their own unique poppy. Children used different mediums from cross stich to origami. These were collated as a class and hung into different trees around the quad in time for the children's arrival on Thursday morning.

On Thursday, shortly before 11am children and teachers gathered in the quad to remember the soldiers who have lost their lives to conflict. They heard from Miss Reed who spoke about the sacrifices that our service men and women have made across the world and specifically about the Kenya Soldiers who fought here in Taveta, Kenya during the East African Campaign of WW1. The children also listened with great respect as Miss Reed read the poem In Flanders Field, it was especially poignant as the children sat beneath their own poppy trees.

Members of Year 8, who have been studying World War 1 in their History lessons, read letters they had written from the perspectives of WW1 soldiers, giving the children listening an insight into the extreme hardship that these young service people faced. Mr Franco then read an extract from the poem For The Fallen.

Mr Sam played the solemn piece of music The Last Post, after which the school stood together in a minute’s silence to show our respect and gratitude to those who have given their lives for us.

They shall grow not old,

as we that are left grow old:

Age shall not weary them,

nor the years condemn.

At the going down of the sun

and in the morning,

we will remember them,

we will remember them.
