As part of our work on Rainforests, this week we were lucky enough to have guest speaker Anne-Marie Gordon come to speak to the Year 4s about her experiences living and working in the Borneo rainforest, the third largest island in the world.
During her talk, Anne-Marie shared details of their research process, their unique living conditions, and fascinating photos of the animals they encountered, including some very "friendly" leeches. She also spoke about the devastating impact of logging on the rainforest and encouraged the children to help protect it by avoiding products with palm oil and choosing items with the FSC logo. Year 4 left the talk inspired and ready to make rainforest-friendly choices—goodbye Oreos and Nutella.
Some of the feedback from the Year 4s about Anne-Marie’s talk was:
“I learnt that if you go to the Borneo rainforest, you get attacked by leeches.” - Ru
“Annemarie’s talk was very interesting. I would enjoy working there in a rainforest but maybe for about a week, not a year!” - Eliza
“I think Anne-Marie’s talk was great! I learnt that rainforests have bearded pigs!” - Hudson
“I learnt that trees can grow very wide and very tall. I would love to do the work in the rainforests because I could help all the animals and study all the plants.” - Norman
“I think Anne-Marie’s talk was brilliant. I found it interesting when there were giant leaves that they used for an umbrella.” - George
“I did not know that Oreos have palm oil in them.” - Albert
“I thought it was really inspiring and fascinating for me and she answered a lot of questions!” - Aria
“I loved it all.” - Jacobi
We would like to thank Anne- Marie for coming to talk to us and for putting together such an informative and interesting presentation.
