Castle Creations

11th November 2021

The Year 1 children were intrigued in their history lesson this week where they found out about why castles were built in the past and their different features of defence. Previously they had explored pictures of castles throughout history and noticed how the designs changed over time from wooden structures on hills to massive enclosures to then having more decorative features.

This week's lesson was about the defensive and protective features of the Norman and Medieval castles. The children learnt the names and function of some of these features and then in small groups got to build their own castles that included these structures. They enjoyed discussing and working out where things should go using the correct terminology. They then labeled their models, showing what they had learnt and explained their designs to each other. Now they can look forward to next week’s lesson where they will be finding out what life was like in a castle through some stories, non-fiction books and role-play.
