Castle Rock and Gingerbread Men

12th November 2022

History

Castles have always been captivating to the imaginations of many, through the ages. This has been the case for the Year 1 children over the last two weeks. They have been looking at the history of British castles, learning about who lived in castles and how they were historically useful. They loved learning different facts about these fascinating structures, such as how castle architecture has changed over time to suit the demands and needs of royalty.

They enjoyed the opportunity to repurpose cardboard pieces to create a role-play castle. Using a sponge printing technique, they created a wall effect on the cardboard pieces. The children learnt the names of different parts of a castle and enjoyed designing their own and labelling it. We fondly named our castle “Castle Mawe”, which means ‘Castle Rock’, although our castle is very much made of recycled paper.

Traditional Tales

This week, the children have immersed themselves in traditional tales looking closely at the story of The Gingerbread Man. The children enjoyed reciting the repetitive parts of this tale. Taking note of the parts of the story that repeat over and over played a huge role in boosting their confidence towards writing out some sentences extracted from the story. They further enjoyed writing recipes on how to make Gingerbread Men. The children each got to make and bake a Gingerbread-Man of their own which they enjoyed eating during their snack time the following day!
