Combustion and Oxidation

13th June 2025

This week, our KS3 children had a great time learning about chemical reactions that involve oxygen, called oxidative reactions.

They started by looking at how oxygen in the air reacts with an apple, then moved on to a reaction using magnesium ribbon. Finally, they explored how burning (combustion) works.

The students learned how to write word equations, showing the starting materials (reactants) and the end results (products). They also found out what some of these products are made of.

It was especially fun to learn about the science behind everyday things, like burning fuel - what fuels are made of and how they affect what is produced when they burn. This has been a fun and exciting week of learning. Please enjoy the photos below showing what we’ve been up to!
