Community and Conservation

29th November 2024

The Year 4s have enhanced their learning over the past fortnight by going on two fun day trips.

The first one was to The Leo Project, an NGO that works with local communities, largely to support their education and healthcare. We visited them as part of our work in PSHEE on ‘Communities’.

Apart from touring the impressive facilities, we also got to help make a mini-podcast in a proper recording studio, tour the abundant vegetable garden, take a close look inside an ambulance, smile and wave at a drone that hovered above us, and - many people’s highlight - to see a working robot that walked and even danced! Thank you to Katie Rothe for letting us visit, and helping us to see the great work the project is doing in Kenyan communities.

Our second trip was to Aberdare National Park. This was linked to our work on ‘Rainforests’ and ‘Living Things and their Habitats’. Although the Aberdares is a montane forest rather than a rainforest, lots of the trees, plants and climate is similar, and it was great to see this up close on a beautifully sunny day.

Our safari also included a stop at a game viewing point, where we could tick off many of the animals on our activity booklet’s checklist, including giant forest hogs, buffalo and waterbuck. Thank you to Asitwi, our ranger guide, and to KWS for facilitating our visit.

The children agreed that having such an amazing natural environment on our doorstep is wonderful, and they encourage everyone in the Braeburn community to visit.
