Conquering Point Lenana: Our Mount Kenya Adventure

26th April 2025

From Sunday 23rd to Thursday 27th March, an intrepid group of pupils, parents, and staff set out on an unforgettable five-day expedition to the summit of Mount Kenya, tackling the Sirimon route to reach Point Lenana. With Base Camp Expeditions guiding us safely every step of the way, our journey was nothing short of extraordinary.

We began our adventure at Sirimon Gate, full of energy and excitement. Over the course of the next four nights, we camped at Old Moses, Likii North Campsite (where we woke up to a magical blanket of snow), Shiptons Camp, and finally returned to Old Moses. Each site brought its own challenges and beauty, but none compared to the final push to the summit.

Summit day began with a 3am wake-up call, and by 4am, we were on the move, head torches glowing in the thin mountain air. The ascent to Point Lenana was tough – snow fell gently around us as we climbed higher – but we are incredibly proud to say that every single child reached the summit. The sense of achievement was immense, and the views were truly spectacular.

After the elation of reaching the peak came the physical test of endurance: a monster 15km hike back to Old Moses. The next morning, we powered through the final 9km descent to Sirimon Gate. Tired but elated, we returned to school with memories that will last a lifetime.

Throughout the expedition, the children displayed resilience, courage, and positivity. Not a single complaint was heard – just encouragement, laughter, and determination. They embodied our school’s values in every way, setting a shining example for others to follow. The parents who joined us were equally amazing, offering support, humour, and camaraderie that made the journey even more special.

A special mention must go to the children who, despite aching legs and very little sleep, turned up for the final day of term with smiles on their faces. Staff were incredibly impressed by their grit and spirit.

We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to Base Camp Expeditions, who not only kept us safe but motivated us through the most challenging moments. Their expertise and support were invaluable.

While we may not be racing to plan the next ascent just yet, we return from Mount Kenya filled with pride – and with a deep appreciation for both the mountain and the amazing young people who climbed it.
