These past five weeks have been packed with hands-on discoveries, creative projects, and deep connections across our learning. The children have shown immense curiosity and enthusiasm, tackling new concepts with a brilliant, practical mindset.
Our mathematical journey took an exciting, real-world turn as we explored the concepts of capacity and volume. To put our learning into practice, the children designed and built their own working rain gauges. By wonderful coincidence, the rainy season arrived right on cue here in Braeburn Nanyuki! The children were absolutely thrilled to head outside, check their gauges, and accurately read the collected rainwater in millilitres. Following this, we dived headfirst into the world of fractions. We took a very hands-on approach to understanding wholes, halves, and quarters by safely cutting up pancakes, lemons, and mangoes.

This mathematical exploration beautifully intertwined with our vibrant Yellow Fortnight. As part of our colour celebrations, we purposefully selected yellow fruits and vegetables for our fraction work, making our learning both delicious and visual. During our yellow brunch sessions, the children put their weighing and mixing skills to the test, preparing banana pancakes, whisking up golden cheese omelettes, and making lemonade. Beyond the kitchen, our Yellow Fortnight prompted some fascinating research into why the colour yellow is universally used for caution, warning signs, and safety gear. The children discovered how high-visibility and reflective materials keep people safe, which inspired them to design and create their very own miniature reflective jackets and custom caution signs.

Our oral hygiene learning also received a fantastic boost when we were privileged to have the BATUK Dentists visit our class. They taught us all about tooth hygiene and how to properly care for our oral health. They were even kind enough to hand out wonderful goodies to all the Year 2s!
Our historical and design inquiries have been equally inspiring as we explored significant individuals who have shaped the world. While learning about Florence Nightingale's revolutionary impact on healthcare, our young designers stepped into the shoes of caregivers.

They carefully selected suitable materials based on their properties to design and construct a functional care kit for a nurse or patient, taking the time to evaluate its overall effectiveness. Our engineering skills were stretched even further when we looked at the pioneering flight designs of the Wright Brothers. Using recycled materials, the children planned, built, tested, and evaluated their own future aircraft and spacecraft, finding creative ways to improve upon early aviation designs.
It has been a truly rewarding five weeks, and the children have earned a wonderful half-term break!
