This week across the school we have been learning about Diwali - the Festival of Light that is celebrated by Hindus. From Year 1 upwards this weeks 'Worldviews' explored what Diwali is and how it is celebrated. EYFS have dived deeper into Diwali as it links to their current leaning theme of 'celebrations'.
FS1 has been a buzz of colour and celebrations! We read a book called ‘Dipla’s Diwali’, which is about a young boy who was excited to share the festival with his little brother. We were able to use this book to further the children’s understanding of Diwali. The children were amazed by all the colourful decorations, the beautiful Rangoli patterns and the dazzling fireworks they saw.
We dove deeper into our exploration of a different culture and country by going on a virtual tour to India in order to find out more facts about the country. The children noticed the colours on the Indian flag, some common animals found in India like the tigers and cows as well as the buildings and their range of foods.
FS1 children explored a variety of materials to make some Diwali decorations like candles and diva lamps and later sat at tables with their pretend lamps. They were inspired to colour in some Rangoli patterns as well as make marks which represented their own Rangoli patterns on the floor using chalks and paint inside and outside. Children also created Indian sweets and cakes.
The week culminated with a BNIS parent coming into EYFS to talk to the children about how her family and others around the world celebrate this amazing festival. The children made links between Diwali and their own celebrations and traditions. It has been a week immersed in colour, lights and exploration and a wonderful opportunity to learn more about another culture.
