Diversity

20th March 2026

Week commencing 16th March was Neurodiversity Celebration week at BNIS. Thought for the Week started us all off by reminding us that everyone’s brain is different and unique and that we all experience the world differently from each other. We were all also encouraged to recognise how planet Earth is completely reliant on biodiversity to function effectively and humans are reliant on neurodiversity in the same way; we need people with differing strengths and abilities as well as people who look at things differently in order to solve problems and move us forward. As Henry Blume (journalist) said"Neurodiversity may be every bit as crucial for the human race as biodiversity is for life in general."

Monday's assembly featured children within the school who shared with us what they had learned they were good at since they have been at BNIS and what they find challenging. Evie told us she was good at writing, shared the introduction to her prize-winning story, and then pointed out that she finds wearing socks difficult. Lavinia told us that she had discovered she was good a really wide range of sports, but that she finds settling and focussing in class difficult - she taught us her 5,4,3,2,1 technique which she uses to help her regulate. Tiki showed us a selection of his incredible Art and then explained how he finds spelling challenging. Everyone gasped as Tazim performed some incredible gymnastics before she explained that she finds Maths difficult.

The whole thing was summed with the reminder that everyone has things they are good at and everyone has things they find hard. We should try not to worry about feeling 'different', as we all do this because we are different and that is what makes life an incredible thing.
