Empowering Digital Citizens: Computing at Braeburn Nanyuki

Computing lessons this term continue to equip our pupils with the skills they need to navigate an increasingly digital world. Our curriculum focuses on using devices as powerful tools for collaboration, creativity, and teamwork. By balancing practical skills with ethical responsibility, we help our pupils become confident, capable users of technology.

At Braeburn Nanyuki, our core philosophy always prioritises active, outdoor learning, and we actively encourage our children to spend time away from screens. However, we also recognise that we live in an increasingly digital world, so it is vital that we teach our pupils how to use technology purposefully so that when they do use digital tools, they do so safely and with a clear sense of responsibility.

We ensure that computing is never taught in isolation; instead, children apply their digital literacy to real school life. During Entrepreneur's Fortnight, children use computing skills practically to design advertisement posters and build budget spreadsheets to manage their business ideas.

Technology also supports pupil voice and leadership. Children use devices to type out formal applications for key leadership roles, such as Student Council representative, House Captain, and Head Pupil. We also regularly use digital cameras and tablets to take high-quality pictures of physical artwork, preserving the creative process and preparing pieces for display across the school.

Our computing lessons are carefully tailored to match the developmental stages of our children across the school.

In Years 1 to 4, the focus is on mastering foundational equipment skills. Children are learning how to use school hardware and software effectively, including using school email strictly for educational purposes and understanding the vital importance of keeping their passwords completely private.

As children move through Years 5 to 8, we encourage growing independence. Here, they learn to use school devices responsibly for research and academic projects, making sure that their digital communication remains respectful and purposeful.

By guiding our children through these structured milestones, we make sure that they progress from cautious beginners into confident, responsible digital citizens who are fully prepared for the future.
