Entrepreneurial Spirit

10th December 2022

For the last fortnight, BNIS has dived headfirst into being a hub of entrepreneurship. Children have explored the many facets of what it takes to be a successful entrepreneur and the different processes that are needed to take an initial idea all the way to sealing deals with customers. We were mindful to encourage our entrepreneurs to be conscious of sustainability and the environment when thinking of their new business ideas. Amongst other activities, the children used maths lessons to work out business plans, apply for loans from the BNIS Bank Manager (Mrs Gould), work out costs and go shopping for their raw products. In week two, the production lines began to roll with children demonstrating their creativity from finger-knitted snakes to T-shirts bags, from herb seedlings to exploding volcanoes, to stained-glass windows and candles to name just a few. As well as these products, food seemed to be a popular theme! In the last few days, we have been treated to the sweet smell of gingerbread and cookies drifting across the quad.

On Friday the quad was transformed into a buzzing marketplace, with each year group having a stall to display their wares. The market was declared open and was immediately flooded with parents and family members eyeing up the products. Despite some of the parents driving a hard bargain, the children held their own and sold their products like true professionals. They also took great pleasure in visiting the other stalls, decorating waffles or having their hair braided at the Creche salon. As the children shut shop; they were eager to count their totals, deduct their float and start up loans in order to see if they had made a loss, broken even or made a profit! We are delighted to announce that the children made an overall 88,000ksh profit which will be banked into the FANs account and used for charitable causes.

Just as a musical interlude was occuring, the mysterious hum of an engine began to rumble above us, as we looked up a yellow helicopter began to swoop in the sky. Within seconds, the children had all run to the field and could now see the famous red-suited visitor hanging out from the helicopter door. They were also delighted when Mrs Gould disembarked from the helicopter and both famous guests were ho ho ho’ing as they carried red sacks filled with beautifully wrapped books to a line up of helpful elves! The jolly elves then helped to spread the festive cheer by giving each child a book. Santa then made his way round school to meet and greet his adoring fans.

Our morning ended with the LIVE final of Braeburn’s Got Talent (BGT) which was a further showcase of the creativity and individuality of our children. The talent blew us away as we were treated to dulcet tunes, hilarious comedy acts, a gymnastics display and choreographed football routine. Festive cheer was the order of the day and, after a parent-voting poll, Merry Maddie the joke teller was crowned our 2022 BGT champion, Congratulations!
