Excelling in Multiplication and Division!

25th May 2023

Multiplication has never been more fun for the Year 3 children! Using the column method can be tricky, but through perseverance, it has allowed them to develop a deep understanding of the fundamental concept of multiplication. They are now confidently multiplying numbers with multiple digits - go Year 3!

We have been using lots of engaging and interactive activities that make aligning the digits correctly and multiplying each column less of a challenge. The column method has not only enhanced the childrens multiplication skills, but has also strengthened their problem-solving abilities and critical thinking.

In the classroom, the Year 3 students have been actively applying their new found knowledge to solve real-life problems and challenges - showing that Maths can be used in your day to day life. From calculating the number of sweets needed for a party to determining the total distance covered during a swimming event, their multiplication skills have proven to be invaluable in their everyday lives.

The children have also shown remarkable enthusiasm and dedication when tackling division problems. Dividing two-digit numbers by one-digit numbers can be a daunting task, but the Year 3 children have embraced the challenge with open minds. By incorporating real world examples and relatable scenarios, the young mathematicians have seen how Maths is valuable for life outside of school.

We are also celebrating our use of Times Tables Rock Stars (TTRS), a fun and interactive APP that helps children to develop their multiplication and division skills. Our children have been competing against each other, and we are thrilled with the progress that they have made. Keep up the great work, everyone!

Harris: I like it because you get to put the big numbers and slice them using the divisor.

Millie: I like that we are doing two digits because I like using place value counters.

Arthur S: I like the calculation because it is more challenging than multiplying and dividing 1 digit numbers.
