Exploring Fractions and Percentages

26th October 2023

The KS3 children have been engaging in some interesting learning experiences with fractions and related concepts. Here's a breakdown of what the children have been working on:

Year 7:

  • Calculating Fractions of Amounts: The children have been learning to calculate fractions of quantities. Using bar models and manipulatives is a great way to help them understand this concept visually before moving on to more formal methods.
  • Mental Methods for Percentages: They explored mental methods for calculating percentages of amounts. This not only helps improve their arithmetic skills but also encourages independent problem-solving.

Year 8:

  • Multiplying and Dividing Fractions: the children have been delving into multiplication and division with fractions. This is an important step in understanding more complex mathematical operations involving fractions.
  • Using Inverses: The children have shown an interest in identifying and using inverses when dividing by fractions. In mathematics, understanding inverses is a fundamental concept, and it's great that the students are engaging with this idea.

It's wonderful to see the children actively participating in their maths education and using creative approaches to solve problems. The reference to "KFC" for the inverse concept adds a fun and memorable twist to their learning experience.
