Exploring Mt. Longonot Volcanic Wonders

22nd February 2024

The trip to Lake Naivasha's Fisherman’s Camp was a mix of excitement and nervousness for the Year 6 children. Despite a sudden downpour upon arrival, they eagerly set up their tents, with some seeking shelter while others persevered in the rain. Once the weather cleared, they embarked on a thrilling boat ride, soaking in the sights of the wildlife around them while Mount Longonot stood tall in the distance.

Back at camp, they enjoyed a game of football and cosy campfire activities before settling into their tents for the night. The next morning, they faced the challenge of hiking Mount Longonot, supporting each other every step of the way. The stunning views from the crater were a testament to their determination, and they descended with a sense of accomplishment.

On the journey home, laughter filled the bus as they recounted their adventures. Back at school, they continued their exploration of volcanoes through hands-on experiments, solidifying their newfound knowledge and passion for discovery. They showcased their learning by simulating volcanic eruptions using materials such as vinegar, washing up liquid, bicarbonate of soda, and red food colouring.

This experiment, based on the Natural History Museum’s formula, allowed them to create their own volcanoes and observe the fascinating process of eruption.
