Fibbo Maths

24th November 2022

What do you think are the next 3 terms in this sequence? 0, 1 , 1 , 2 , 3 , 5 , 8 , 13 , 21 ….

Did you know that November 23rd is Happy Fibonacci Day? Well, now you do! This is a day set aside to celebrate the works of the world famous mathematician Leonardo Bonacci who discovered and advanced a unique mathematical sequence in nature notably in the shape of snail shells, arrangement of florets in sunflowers, rolling of chameleon tails, whirl winds etc.

In Year 7, we marked this day by analyzing the terms in the sequence, generating and continuing one of his famous sequences 0, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21 …. which is extended by adding the previous two terms in order to derive the next term each time.

Writing some numbers, especially the very large ones can be confusing or even just cumbersome, so we have been learning about a cool way of rewriting and expressing ordinary positive integers into standard forms or format and vice versa. We later extended this to also rewrite decimal numbers in standard form. They particularly found expressing 10,100, 1000 etc. as powers of 10 very interesting.
