This term, Year 4 travelled back in time to learn all about Ancient Egypt. The children were very excited to find out how people lived thousands of years ago. We looked at how the River Nile helped the Egyptians grow food and where they were located on the World map. We also learned about the powerful Pharaohs, how they built the giant pyramids, and what they believed about their many gods and goddesses.
In our Art and Design lessons, the students got hands-on with history. They made their own "Royal cartouches" (nameplates) by writing their names in hieroglyphics on paper they had stained to look like old parchment. The class also had fun making Pharaoh head-dresses out of card. To learn how bodies were preserved in the past, we even performed a science experiment where we "mummified" an apple!

In English, our main goal was learning how to write detailed information reports. The children practised using formal writing and specific history words to explain different parts of Egyptian life. They did a great job of organising their facts so that anyone reading their reports could easily understand how this ancient society worked.
In Science, we have been learning how to group and sort living things. The children practised making "sorting keys" to identify different animals and plants. A big highlight was our trip to the William Holden Education Centre. While we were there, the pupils got to see many different types of animals with backbones and searched for tiny creatures like insects in their natural homes.

In Maths, we have been working hard on multiplication and division. The children used several different methods to help them solve tricky problems. They used number lines and special charts to see how numbers work together. By breaking large numbers into smaller parts, they are becoming much more confident in solving difficult maths challenges.
