Fun Science Club

13th January 2022

During our afterschool ‘Fun Science Club’, children in Years 5 and 6 enjoyed watching a demonstration where baking soda was combined with vinegar to puff up a balloon with some gas.

Children were amazed as they watched the balloon inflate and bulge with trapped gas. When the gas was released on a candle, the flame went out each time meaning the gas does not support burning hence can be used to put out unwanted fires. In the real world, this gas is used in fire extinguishers…

We also learnt that this gas is used by plants to make their own food. A pretty fascinating type of gas! The scientists call it CARBON DIOXIDE!
