The FS1 children had many exciting learning experiences during the first half of the term, centred on the theme 'All About Me'. In line with this theme and driven by the children's interests, they explored the story 'Funny Bones' by Janet and Allan Ahlberg. They examined the illustrations, shared their favourite parts of the story, and benefited from the book's repetition, which aided in expanding their vocabulary.
They identified various animal skeletons and the associated sounds, compared and measured bones of different sizes, and embarked on a classroom scavenger hunt to find hidden skeletons.
In a playful twist, they engaged in 'peekaboo' role-play to give each other friendly scares during class. Using music and movement, they even learned to identify the different bones in their bodies through the song 'The Skeleton Dance'. The connection to 'people who help us' was not lost on the FS1 children, who actively participated in doctor-themed role-play, discovering that bones can mend when broken... but a doctor's help is necessary!
Additionally, the children discussed the importance of maintaining a healthy body through balanced nutrition and exercise. They had great fun using their senses to create 3D art inspired by 'Funny Bones', and they explored the concept of light and darkness in a dark den using handheld torches.
Towards the end of this enriching theme, each child bravely shared what frightened them in real life:
Esther: 'snakes scare me'
Leo: 'I don't like ghosts'
Arabelle: 'I am scared of monsters'
Ahadi: 'Monsters'
Ashton: 'My bedroom'
