During their most recent block of learning, the children in Year 1 have been trying to answer the question “Is fire a living thing?”. As part of this quest, the children and teachers piled into a school bus last week and headed over to the Lolldaiga Hills. Their first stop was Moon’s Camp, where they met camp owners Ed and Moon, who told the children (over a snack, of course) about a recent fire that they had experienced nearby. The children observed the difference in the area where the fire had spread to, and where it hadn’t.
Ed then told them about how the charcoal that is left over after a fire can actually help seeds grow, and maintain moisture in the soil. The idea that regrowth after a fire can actually be a good thing amazed the children, and they absolutely loved planting indigenous seeds in the ground where the fire had been just months earlier.
After a game drive, the children visited Ole Naishu where Mr Roberts and his fire-fighting team explained to the students the common causes of fire, how professionals fight fire, and most importantly how fire can be prevented. The highlight for many students here was looking at the home-made fire truck and getting a chance to hold the hose and spray water!
The children enjoyed a spot of lunch and a paddle in the river before heading back to school to ponder further whether or not fire does do all of the seven life processes.
A huge thanks to the Roberts and Hough families for hosting the Year 1 children. Asanteni sana!
