Gone Fishing

10th March 2023

A few weeks back a Y1 child said to me, "Mrs Gould, Mrs Gould, can we go on a trip? Can we go fishing?"

"Fishing?" I replied, "this sounds like a nice idea, let's think about it".

When the Year 1 children went on to learn all about water, rivers and the sea during their blue focus in Colours Fortnight, the opportunity seemed too good to miss; we were therefore, absolutely delighted when Soames Hotel agreed to allow us to bring the year group down to fish for talapia in their pond.

The children set off with great excitement, clutching a wide range of items from home - telescopic rods, simple rods and homemade stick rods - with hats firmly on heads and snacks in hand. I was absolutely thrilled to be able to accompany them to the hotel, fish with them and spend the morning in such beautiful surroundings.

The fish did not disappoint! A total of 38 fish were caught by the 21 children (all were returned to the pond to swim again!) Unfortunately not everyone actually caught a fish but they all still had a lovely time and were a great representation of the school in terms of behaviour, manners and responsibility.

Whilst there, many of the children also put to good use their recent teaching around using watercolours to create some beautiful landscape paintings. It was particularly lovely to see how their understanding of filling the paper and using the brush carefully has developed.
