3rd September 2022
During our first week back we have started our whole school project called: Growing Our Future. The work is giving the children a chance to connect with each other and with nature. All work is built around a focus book - EYFS/Y1 will be using Errols’ Garden by Gillian Hibbs, Y2/Y3 will be using The Secret Garden by Linda Sarah & Fiona Lumbers Y4-Y8 will be using The Promise by Nicola Davies & Laura Carlin. All three of the books focus on a child’s desire to impact the natural world around them through rewilding, and on building a sense of community through interacting with nature in shared spaces.
Children have been busy exploring this topic, forming links to English, Science, Geography and many other areas of the curriculum. A highlight has been the increased opportunities for outdoor learning. Children have been spending time making or repurposing plant pots, sewing seeds and watering plants. On Friday children planted tree saplings around the play equipment and in the quad. As well as practical gardening, children have delved into nature related poetry and explored the ancient Japanese tradition of Forest Bathing.
In assembly we celebrated the kind donation of plants by the Harris Family, as well as having a mini litter picking competition to demonstrate how to use our new littler picking sticks.
We are looking forward to another fascinating week based on this theme, which will culminate with Green Day on Friday the 9th with all children wearing Green non-uniform and making a 50 bob donation.
