As this is our last term, Creche joined the rest of the school during the STEAM fortnight. The children’s learning has been centred around the story of the ‘The Three Little Pigs’, thinking about being responsible with the way we use different materials that are locally available.
They started by familiarising themselves with the traditional tale. They counted how many little pigs were in the story, looked at how many houses were in the story and what the houses were made of.
Which house was the strongest? Will it be blown away by the wolf? Why did it not get blown away? If you built your own house today, how strong would it be? These are some of the questions we answered as we learnt about the different materials used to construct a house.
Next, the children designed their own strong house. They had to make the difficult decision of which materials to use to construct their house, but once they had made up their minds, they got to work! Bricks were made using mud (locally available) and these (mud) bricks were then stuck on top of each other and voila, their own strong brick house was made.
Sustainability is all about using locally available materials without hurting our lovely planet, Earth. The Creche children were real architects and engineers when it came to building a sustainable home!
