'In Our Hands' Fortnight!

6th September 2025

This term, our whole school came together for a special Immersion Fortnight inspired by the book ‘In Our Hands’ by Lucy Farfort. The book tells the story of children who bring colour, joy, and change back to a grey and lifeless world. At its heart, it celebrates community, hope, and the power we all have to make a difference. It promotes values such as kindness, respect, resilience, and the belief that even small actions can create big change.

Across the fortnight, each year group explored these themes through creative activities:

  • Early Years experimented with colourful handprints to build a bright cityscape, reminding us how even the smallest hands can bring joy.
  • Year 1 created a beautiful tree of handprints, symbolising growth and togetherness.
  • Year 2 took part in ‘Little Hands, Big Descriptions,’ using vivid adjectives to describe scenes from the book.

  • Year 3 reflected on what makes them happy and wrote their own joyful pieces inspired by the story.
  • Year 4 painted pebbles, drew their handprints around them, and coloured designs to symbolise personal strengths and contributions.

  • Year 5 produced expressive self-portraits, celebrating how our unique identities strengthen our community.
  • Year 6 designed posters with the powerful message that mistakes are part of learning, especially in maths!

  • Key Stage 3 interviewed members of our school community, including kitchen staff and groundsmen, highlighting the many hands that make BNIS such a colourful and supportive place.

The children’s work has filled our school with colour, creativity, and a shared sense of pride. What a great way to start the school year! Just as the book reminds us, the future really is in our hands.
