It’s a ‘hole-in-one’ for Sasha

10th February 2023

Sasha has become a golf champion and it seems her passion and love for golf runs in the family.

Sasha’s dad actually got her interested in golf when he bought her her first set of clubs then took her on the range when she was around 8. Every time her mum went to play golf, Sasha went along too (she says because she was bored - but look at her now) and hit a few balls to pass the time. She found it challenging at first, but wanted to get better the longer she was on the course.

She began playing golf competitively when her brother started entering competitions because she wanted to beat him - nothing quite like sibling rivalry. This was the start of ‘competitive Sasha’ and when she really began to enjoy the challenge of the sport.

Sasha recently won the ICEA Lions Golf Tournament and beat her dad - a true story of how the student becomes the teacher! Sasha has now won three Junior Golf Foundation (JGF) competitions and plays Sports Clubs around the country.

Last year was the Nation Classic, held at the Nanyuki Sports Club, which Sasha and her brother both took part in. Her brother won the competition and was named the Defending Overall Champion of the Nation Classic. Sasha won the title of Junior Defending Champion of the Nation Classic. Next month, the Nation Classic is returning to Nanyuki and Sasha is hoping to take the title of Defending Overall Champion from her brother! Keep your eyes and ears peeled for more news of our golfing superstar!!

Sasha’s goal is to become as good as her trainer, Bundi, who is -2 handicap. Sasha currently has a handicap of 25 so still has a way to go, but she still has her eye on the ball and the goal in her sights!

She loves how fascinating the game is and how the aim is to get such a small ball into a small hole. Sasha commented that she enjoys the complexity of the game; how it is your concentration, mindset and breathing that need to be controlled and overcome to making you a good golfer, not just your swing or how well you hit the ball. Sasha is looking forward to playing overseas and making sure she hits 50+ balls every day to practise. She is preparing for the Safaricom Golf Tour and if she wins this tournament, she will win 10 days overseas. We are all rooting for you, Sasha!

“If you go round the course and you enjoyed it, maybe you should try it again, don’t push someone to do something they do not enjoy - make sure you enjoy what you do! Resilience is just as important, keep on trying and practising.” - Sasha to any aspiring golfers.
