3rd July 2021
On Wednesday the 30th of June, the children in Year 7 and some from Year 8 were visited by Dr Stacy Weir and Cpl Kellie Phillips, medics from the BATUK unit. They were in school to train the children to be Little Life Savers.
In this valuable training the children learned and practised how to respond during an emergency. This included: how to check for safety; how to make an emergency call; and what to say and do when acquiring help. They learned the importance of using landmarks to describe a location, and also the emergency numbers to call when requiring assistance - 112, 999 and 911 will all work in Kenya.
The children also used a life-like dummy to help them learn how to check for responsiveness on an unconscious person and how to administer CPR ensuring they are doing chest compressions the right way. The children really loved it when they were able to use walkie-talkies as they felt like real-life rescuers! We are extremely grateful for the BATUK medic team's time and generosity and we hope we can welcome them back in the future to train some other emergency rescuers!
It was great fun and an essential educational learning experience!
