Children in Year 2 have been hard at work during the first month of the year. Everyone has had to really stretch their brains whilst focusing on their reading and writing in particular. We have been looking at the key elements of a perfect sentence such as finger spaces, capital letters and punctuation. Report writing is the focus of this term in English and the children have let their imaginations run wild when inventing their own mythical creatures. Y2MH are discovering more about the Wild Slithercorn (a mix between a snake and a unicorn) and Y2TK have come across a Magical Rainbow Snake, nothing like we have seen before… look out for them on your next safari!
The children have been real superstars: working hard to partition numbers up to 100 into their tens and ones as they learn about Place Value in Maths. They drew number tracks with chalk to practise writing their numbers and even went on a shopping trip around the class to fill their grocery carts and pay their “shopkeepers”.
In Science, we have been looking at Habitats. The children have enjoyed exploring the school to find habitats. Last week, they hunted for microhabitats and found minibeasts in bushes and on trees. They drew and painted their habitats using only the primary colours and had to think carefully about the different ways to combine these colours to really bring their habitats to life. As if that wasn’t enough fun, children even had time to put their thinking caps back on to complete a pictogram of the different mini beasts they identified around school.
Children and teachers from Year 2 were extremely lucky last week to be able to visit Ol Pejeta; this was a fantastic opportunity to identify different animals in their natural habitats. Two game drives meant children were treated to views of rhinos at the watering hole, zebras, plenty of impala, some waterbuck and even an elephant that was cleverly spotted from miles away by one of our special young scientists!
Everyone learned so much from our trip - ask any Year 2 what the difference between à Black and White Rhino is - you'll be impressed! Miss Harris and Ms Kamau came back to school with enormous smiles on their faces, so proud of how wonderfully Year 2 represented the school, listening to the guides and of course asking lots of questions.
