Year 4 have been thinking, building and partying like Romans for the last few weeks and to finish off their learning about this Ancient Empire, the children made pizzas this week. They learned that modern pizzas were really only invented in Naples in the late 19th century, which is more than 1500 years after the Roman Empire fell; however, the Romans were responsible for bringing the world many great things, including roads, effective town layouts, running water and even socks! And, much much later, pizza…
The children worked in small groups to make their dough, leaving it to rise over lunch. They then rolled it out and put their chosen toppings on. There were a few issues with the coal pizza oven but luckily the modern invention of electric ovens in the kitchen helped us to enjoy our Italian delicacies!
“Because the Romans made bread and pizza is flat bread with sauce and cheese on.”
“We were learning about the Romans and this was linked to this.”
“To represent the Romans and to have fun.”
“To have a fun activity and to eat it - yum!”
“Working together.”
“When we were making the dough.”
“The toppings.”
“Eating it!”
“That we were able to eat our delicious creation!”
“It is hard work.”
“You need to follow instructions.”
“It is easier to make them with partners.”
“You need to wait for the dough.”
“If you pay attention to the yeast you get the best pizza.”
“It takes time and sometimes a few hours but with the right ingredients it will taste delicious!”
