Mark-Making in Creche

12th March 2022

Writing is an important aspect of our learning as it helps children practise how to hold a pencil as well as strengthen and control their finger muscles. Writing can also represent a child’s thoughts and ideas. It gives children the opportunity to express themselves creatively and allows them to communicate their feelings through their drawings or even use their marks to tell a story!

In crèche, children have been learning how to make different marks using different writing tools. Some have been using finger-paint to write; others have tried out paint brushes and water, or flour and dry felt-tip pens and of course the good old fashioned felt-tip pens! Teachers have been so proud to see the outcomes of everyone’s hard work.

By giving crèche children the opportunity to explore different forms of mark-making, they become more engaged in the whole writing process and find themselves wanting to write more and more - by the looks of things, we have some novelists-to-be in our midst!
