Maths Challenges in Year 4

10th September 2022

As part of our introduction to Maths in Year 4, the children have attempted two team challenges: a paper chain challenge and a marshmallow challenge. These involved using resources such as cardboard, glue, scissors, raw spaghetti and tape to build the longest or tallest structure.

These were designed to encourage teamwork and communication, as well as logical thinking skills. The challenges also tied in to our Braeburn Circles values of resilience, curiosity and motivation - everyone loves a prize!

When the children reflected on the challenges after they were complete, they learnt that the teams that did the best were always those where everyone contributed in a positive way and listened to one another’s ideas. Getting started quickly and being open to adapting ideas were also important to be successful.
