Mayan Houses

24th February 2023

Year 5 have been learning about the Mayans and as a part of their learning, they have been making model houses, choosing how to decorate the outer walls and roof.

The models needed careful construction and some help from their peers to hold pieces in place until they were stable. They then had to secure these pieces on to the base.

The children had to decide between painting the outer walls or experimenting with how to apply mud to give their homes a more authentic effect. Surprisingly, no more than half chose the ‘messier option'!

The roof took a lot more patience and some trial and error to decide what to use – grass, thin sticks or paper straws with some paint after.

The Year 5s were always keen to progress to the next lesson and worked well to support each other when something did not go as expected. Well done, Year 5s, on your great teamwork and perseverance.
