Meerkat Mail

26th April 2022

Children in Year 1 have become meerkat fanatics! After reading the story Meerkat Mail by Emily Gravett, children set off on a mission to find out all about these cute animals, even inviting the main character of the story, Sunny, to come and visit us in Kenya…

Year 1 discovered that meerkats come from the Kalahari desert and that a group of meerkats is called a mob. We know that they are mammals that have four toes and that they take it in turns to stand guard while the rest of the mob eat and play.

When Sunny replied to our postcards, saying that he would love to come and visit us in Kenya and have a taste of Kenyan scorpions, the children decided to invent a flying machine to help him get here.

The students imagined that as he flew over Kenya he might get to see what Kenya looks like from above and see some of our big mountains such as Mount Longonot and Mount Kenya.

Year 1 are now planning to take Sunny the meerkat to the best places in Kenya and also introduce him to some of the different animal families (giving a great chance for the children to discover these places and animals too). The students will be helping Sunny write lots of postcards from the different places he visits; some of these will be on display on the class door for World Book Day.
