In Block 5, Year 3 children have been learning about money in Maths. They explored pounds, pence, and Kenyan shillings, mastering counting, converting, and giving change. Through hands-on activities, they learned that 1 pound equals 100 pence and 1 Kenyan shilling equals 100 cents. This foundational knowledge prepared them to solve practical word problems involving purchases.
This week, the children faced a real-world situation: calculating how much money remained after various purchases. In groups, they brainstormed and shared strategies to find the correct answers. First, they determined the total amount of money needed for their purchases. Some groups used the column method for subtraction, while others physically removed the money for each item to find the remaining amount.
This collaborative effort reinforced their mathematical skills and reinforced the importance of teamwork and communication. Every group successfully calculated the correct change, showing their ability to apply mathematical knowledge to everyday situations, making learning practical and enjoyable.
