24th March 2023

The Year 3s and 4s are currently studying ‘Marvellous Mountains of Kenya’ and this week two special experiences helped enhance their learning.

The first was a talk by a parent, Sam Taylor, who has not only climbed to Point Lenana on Mt Kenya, but also to the highest point on Earth - Mt Everest! Mr Taylor’s talk was extremely interesting and we especially enjoyed the photos, the funny anecdotes and the answers to our questions about the perseverance required to reach the summit. He said one of the best reasons to climb a mountain is to learn about yourself as a person. Who knows? There may be some future Everest summiters amongst us!

They also had the opportunity to visit the Mt Kenya Climbing Gym to do some rock climbing on Thursday. The children warmed up on the bouldering wall and then tried out one of the three climbs on the main wall. Many people were able to conquer their fears of heights and learn to trust that the instructors belaying them would actually catch them if they fell! Lots of people also reached the top of their chosen route, but even if they didn’t, they learnt lots about what is required to climb successfully - mental and physical strength, and confidence.

They will conclude their learning about mountains when they go on a trip to Old Moses camp on Mt Kenya in the final week of term. Lots of marvellous mountains and lots of marvellous experiences for Year 4!
