On Safari

10th March 2023

Everything pink, orange and turquoise has been put away and in our classrooms we now have African animal toys, books and toy binoculars. With excitement, the Early Years children have started their Safari topic.

The FS2 children started this week by looking closely at safari vehicles. Some children have drawn them while others made small models. As a FS2 team, they made a big safari land cruiser out of boxes. This was a large prop for the FS2 family assembly this Friday and now will become a part of the play area for the rest of the topic - how creative!

Learning topic specific vocabulary is a key aspect of all our units, this week we have been finding out which things we might need for a camping safari. The children had great ideas; we obviously have some experienced campers in our mists. They successfully put up a tent and the children are now role playing camping and using an enriched vocab such as; cool box, sleeping bag, fly sheet, mess tent.

Before the children dive into finding out about safari animals over the next few weeks, the children have had a chance to talk about their favourite safari animals. I wonder if this will change as we learn more …
