Optical Illusions and Miniature Worlds

13th June 2026

This term, Year 3 transformed into a laboratory of optical illusions, architectural drafting, and digital experimentation as the children explored the fascinating world of perspective photography and drawing.

Armed with iPads, our young creators stepped outside the classroom to explore forced perspective photography. This technique relies on strategic positioning to trick the human eye, making everyday objects or people appear dramatically larger, smaller, or closer than they actually are.

The children quickly leaned into the role of director, collaborating in small teams to align their subjects perfectly with the camera lens. We witnessed incredible bursts of humour and storytelling: children holding up giant-sized classmates in the palms of their hands. Through this hands-on digital exploration, they learned that photography is not just about capturing reality, but actively reshaping it.

The experimentation deep-dived further into abstraction when we introduced a vibrant collection of miniature toys. By bringing these tiny figures right up to the foreground and pushing human subjects deep into the background, they crafted stunning optical illusions.

This exercise taught the children foundational concepts of scale, focal points, and depth of field. They discovered how the lens shifts focus, and how a tiny plastic toy dinosaur can effortlessly capture the grandeur of a prehistoric monster when positioned with artistic precision.

Transitioning from the digital lens back to the physical page, the children tackled one of the classical pillars of drafting: one-point perspective. This rigorous challenge required them to use geometric precision to create a three-dimensional landscape on a flat piece of paper. The project focussed on drawing a classic disappearing road heading straight toward the horizon.
