Our Phonics Journey

12th September 2025

At Braeburn Nanyuki, we follow a synthetic phonics approach using both Letters and Sounds and Jolly Phonics. Synthetic phonics involves identifying individual sounds in a word, then blending and segmenting them to support reading and writing.

Phonics is taught explicitly every day in EYFS, Year 1, and in Year 2. Children in Crèche and FS1 take part in Phase 1 activities, such as songs, rhymes, and listening games, which help them recognise and distinguish sounds in their environment. These activities lay a strong foundation for future reading and writing.

In FS2 and Year 1, children begin Phase 2 phonics, where they are introduced to letter–sound correspondences and start building words. They learn to blend sounds to read and segment them to spell simple words and sentences.

Teachers ensure that reading books are carefully matched to each child’s growing phonics knowledge, enabling them to experience success and build confidence. Alongside this, children enjoy a wide range of stories, poetry, and non-fiction texts, fostering a lifelong love of reading. We are proud of the progress our children make in phonics and please support your child at home by reading to them or listening to them read to you to develop a lifelong love of reading.
