Scientific Investigations

10th September 2022

From the beginning of the term, we as the rest of the school, delved into our immersion week Growing our Future as inspired by the book “The Promise” by Nicola Davies and Laura Carlin. It powerfully illustrates how a desolate scorched and bare neighbourhood could be turned around into an aesthetic thriving and green environment through an accidental turned intentional promise of planting a seed.

This week, the Year 7 and 8 children took an active and participatory role under our theme and engaged in robust scientific discussions, activities and investigations about plants in nature and how humans have impacted on prevalence and distribution of plants.

With a science bias, they set out to investigate and understand what seeds need to germinate and grow well. The children learnt important practical skills about conducting and monitoring experiments. They investigated a range of things such as: do seeds need light, soil, water, and so on? Would partially boiled seeds really germinate? What events precede the sprouting of seeds? How do seeds form from flowers? ….and finally care and protection of our environment inline with our Braeburn core value Respect.

It has been a truly enriching and worthwhile time reflecting and understanding how to propagate and enhance different plant life around us. We have been reminded to fully appreciate the splendour of our world.
