Searching for answers in Science Club

27th October 2022

Our Year 3 and 4 children are having a fabulous time at this half term's new extra-curricular offering: Fun Science Club

Their quest, for this week, was to find out why a glass full of water covered with a card on top does not release the water when turned upside down. They were are captivated by this. However, when the same procedure is done with a glass that is not full, the water gushes out almost instantly. After an exciting discussion, they discovered that a glass full of water has no air pushing the water downwards when inverted whilst the one that is not completely filled has ‘air pressure’ pushing the water out immediately once the glass is inverted! How fascinating!

The next mission was to find out how to defy gravity! How could they keep a pin floating in air or suspended upwards? Initially it was mission impossible! With discussions, they worked out a way to hold up a magnet suspended in air with the help of a magnetic force.

Fun Science Club has allowed a space for children to think critically and work in a team in order to solve a common problem. It has been great to see them problem solve and take part in discussions around Science.
