Spotlight on Jackson Pollock

12th March 2022

As part of Art Week this week, Year 6 learnt about Jackson Pollock. They began by imagining that they had taken a trip to a World-famous art gallery: The Guggenheim in New York, or the Louvre in Paris, perhaps. They discussed the proper etiquette of art galleries and discussed what they had learnt during the Year 6 trip to Nairobi National Museum in Term 1 about how to move around and behave in exhibits. It was then time to visit the world famous "Year 6 Jackson Pollock Gallery"!

Children viewed a range of Pollock's work, critiquing and analysing each piece before creating a sketch of their favourite art work. Everyone demonstrated wonderful artistic understanding, discussing the emotions that the pieces, particularly Pollock's drip paintings, evoked in them.

In the afternoon, came the fun part... Year 6 headed outside and changed into the scruffy clothes which they had mysteriously been asked to bring in.

Children attached sponged to their elbows and knees in order to create abstract pieces of art from dots of paint. They blended, blotted and spread the paint in order to create beautiful compositions from just a few starting colours. It was definitely worth the mammoth cleaning duty that followed, as children unanimously agreed that this had been the best activity of Art Week by far!
