Sustainable Living

11th May 2023

This week has been chock-a-block with exciting lessons as the Yr 7 and 8 children have investigated how they can implement their thoughts and ideas surrounding their STEAM theme as well as putting the finishing touches to their projects. They have shown amazing levels of dedication, curiosity, understanding and creativity in exploring their STEAM question: “How can a change in lifestyle impact the environment?”

Their learning has spanned plenty of topics and given the children an ample amount to explore, from greenhouse gas emissions from different food types, to comparing modes of farming, veganism, upcycling in fashion, a look at Nanyuki town planning, to preparing a delicious vegan diet. The Year 7s and 8s have shown how thinking intellectually, socially and environmentally can be an extremely exciting and rewarding process.

Our final STEAM exhibition is centered around the rooms of a home. Highlighting the kitchen area with facts about food types and their relative GHG emissions. There is also an interactive activity on the choice of food and a sample of a vegan diet - did you manage to check it out during the STEAM exhibition?

The living room showcases the children’s work on sustainable living compressed into ‘Zines’ (mini magazines). There is even an opportunity to watch a video in the living room showing what the children have been doing in each subject. The bedroom wardrobe shows off the concept of upcycling with the children having created fashionable clothing accessories from out-of-fashion materials - maybe this is something you could try at home, you might set a new trend!

The home office area is full of information on Nanyuki town planning and there is even a great suggestion to turn Nanyuki into a truly sustainable and eco-friendly modern town.

We couldn’t be prouder of the insightful thinking and innovative ideas that have come about over the last two weeks in KS3. Keep those ideas bubbling away, hopefully these children will be the future sustainable thinkers we need to improve life as we know it!
