The Deep Blue Wonders

25th January 2024

FS2 has had a great start to the unit 'Under the Sea.' The children have been engaged, and we've had some amazing discussions. In our cold task, where we assess what the children already know, it was wonderful to hear some interesting facts.

Each week, they have eagerly anticipated learning about different creatures. They began by exploring rock pools as one of the habitats and identified the types of sea creatures that live there. The children enjoyed some sea-themed poetry, and each had an opportunity to learn and perform a poem of their choice.

This week, we delved into the giants of the sea – the whales. We read 'The Storm Whale,' and the children were able to empathise with a little whale that was washed ashore and rescued by a little boy. We explored different ways to manage our feelings when saying goodbye, just like the little boy when he bid farewell to the whale.

In Music, the children learned to identify different whales by the timbre of their voices as they mastered the 'Whale Song' and also explored various musical instruments. Measuring capacity seamlessly integrated with our water play, where the children investigated the capacity of different containers and discussed which sea creatures would fit into them.

There is a lot more to learn in the next few weeks, and we hope the children will continue to share their amazing learning experiences.
