The Great Braeburn Bake Off

26th June 2021

GBBO 2021

Friday 24th June was GBBO day at Braeburn Nanyuki. All over the Nanyuki area, young bakers were mixing, folding, tasting, scooping and decorating throughout Thursday evening to create their entry for the 2021 baking competition. Last year's event was held online; the excitement that this year's event was in-person was palpable!

As the week leading up to the event progressed, a sense of realisation dawned on the judging panel - a HUGE amount of children were talking about their baking entry; we started to fear for our waistlines. We were right to be scared! As the gates opened on Friday morning, the baked entries started flooding in. The team of 'labellers' could hardly keep up! A smell of cake flooded the air and the tables filled in minutes. THE SCHOOL WAS OVERFLOWING WITH DELICIOUS BAKED GOODIES!

After two hours of furious photography and logistical confusion, the bidding was open. Parents received an online set of pictures and were invited to make a bid on any item that they liked the look of, to enable their family to enjoy some of the delicious treats that evening. There were many interesting bidding techniques - go high on one, go low on many or bid random sums that may just pip someone else to the post. It was great fun to watch as the numbers pinged in from all over the place.

Whilst the bidding was in action, Mrs Lettsome and Mrs Gould got round to judging. It was IMPOSSIBLE for them to taste every entry themselves so the rest of the staff were drafted in to help out. The judging duo inspected every entry, listened to feedback from the numerous tasters, and retested where necessary. They are still discussing the final outcome but were clear to share that EVERY entry was delicious and that they were beyond impressed with efforts made.

At the end of the day, the winning bidders received their cakes and the feedback flooded in by text throughout the evening. Well done everyone, it feels like the whole of Nanyuki managed to benefit from this fun event! We will have raised a generous sum of money which will be put to good use. Once we have managed to recover from the over-eating, we will total up and feed back to you all.

A big thanks to all the bakers' assistants who supported, coached and guided the mini-bakers - they could not have done it without you! The photos below will give you a peek into the amount of goodies we received AND not every entry is featured!
