The Science of Sound

29th January 2021

This term children in year 4 have been learning all about sound: how it’s made, how it travels, how to make louder and quieter sounds and how the pitch of a sound can be changed.

The children have been enjoying the topic and this week had the opportunity to make sounds travel further by creating a string telephone. It turned out to be a great way of demonstrating how sound travels. In this case, the vibrations passed through the string and into the cup at the other end of the telephone.

We are hoping to build some of our own instruments in class and put into action the things we have learnt so far. Keep an eye out for the year 4s making lots of noise in the not too distant future!
