There's More to Masks than COVID!

10th June 2022

It was a sign of the times - when asked what types of masks there are, and what they are used for, that our bright Year 3 students responded:

“For protecting us from Covid” or

“So we don’t spread our germs from our mouths” or

“To cover our nose so that we don’t get sick or make others sick”

After sharing images of theatrical masks, the students discussed how they have in fact seen other types of masks from across history and cultures, which linked perfectly into thier new Art topic - Greek Theatrical Masks. This compliments their History topic on Ancient Greece.

The students began by choosing an emotion to represent in their masks. They then sketched out some ideas with characteristic large noses, mouths and eyes. After choosing their preferred features, every student used chalk pastels to draw their mask with carefully chosen colours on black paper.

In their next Art lesson, they will build on their understanding and ideas by beginning to create their masks using cardboard and papier-mâché. Hopefully they will have time before the school year ends to act out some Ancient Greek scenes with them!
