Thrilling Adventures and Discovery

Year two have begun this half of the term learning how to write informal letters to our family, friends, and even characters from books. The highlight of the week was creating an enjoyable party invitation.

In Geography, we took a safari into the Kenyan Savannah, focusing on the Maasai Mara. We researched the Big Five animals and discussed conservation methods. We discovered that the Maasai Mara allows human activities, with the Maasai community herding cattle in the conservancies. We also gained insights into Maasai culture, including leadership roles, and the roles of men, women, warriors, and children. We even had the pleasure of crafting necklaces inspired by their own, proudly wearing them while performing the Maasai dance.

The highlight of our Science lessons this week has been exploring the concept of dependency. We discussed how different organisms rely on each other for survival in their habitats. This led us to examine various food chains, which we enjoyed illustrating in our books. The children learned about the crucial role of the sun in the food chain, providing the necessary light and energy for plants to produce their own food. Plants are the producers, while animals that consume plants are primary consumers.

Those that feed on primary consumers are known as secondary consumers. Some animals, like vultures, sit at the top of the food chain due to a lack of natural predators.

Decomposers, including worms, fungi, bacteria, and other organisms, serve as the final link in a food chain. They contribute to the decay of once-living organisms, adding nutrients to the soil for new plants to grow. This cycle marks the beginning of a new food chain.
